The role of the school principal has certainly changed over the last 20 years. In the past, the role of the principal was basically management and running an organized, quiet school building. Often, this was from the office with a door shut most of the day. The focus was on teaching and not on learning.

Now, the principal is expected to be highly visible, an instructional leader, and devoted to building a strong school culture that focuses on student learning and well-being as well as school improvement. The role has become increasingly complex and demanding. Yet, it is one of the most rewarding ones in the field of education.

Principals must build strong relationships with teachers, staff, and the school community while maneuvering constant mandates and increasing expectations. In addition, they must be data-driven and focus on developing a professional learning community for students and teachers. With the growing diversity of students, schools must be inclusive, equity-focused, and conscious of the emotional well-being of students as well as its educators. The leadership of the school principal is critical in this work.

An additional issue facing principals is the shortage of teachers. This is probably one of the most heart-breaking issues facing education. The profession of being an educator is demanding but it is also one that truly makes a difference in this world. Consequently, the principal must ensure that present teachers are mentored, coached, and supported in order to retain these precious educators.
