As school administrators, we know that the battle for student achievement begins with presence. When students are chronically absent, even the most exceptional instructional strategies lose their impact. However, traditional compliance letters and punitive attendance policies rarely solve the underlying issues causing students to miss class.
Data from recent school leadership cohorts shows that the most effective way to improve student attendance is by intentionally shifting our focus toward student belonging and positive school culture. When students feel safe, valued, and excited about their school community, attendance rates naturally rise.
Here are three practical levers that Principals and Assistant Principals can implement this quarter to build a culture of attendance:
Elevate Student Voice: Create meaningful leadership and feedback opportunities for students who traditionally feel disconnected from the school community.
Reimagine Incentive Systems: Move away from “perfect attendance” awards (which penalize students who get sick) and transition toward rewarding growth, collective class goals, and positive behavior milestones.
Audit Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS): Ensure your MTSS frameworks treat attendance issues as early-warning indicators for academic or social-emotional needs rather than isolated behavioral infractions.
